Stone Shapes & Cuts Guide

What is a Cut?
When a gemstone is prepared for jewelry, a cut refers to how the stone is shaped and polished. Cuts can range from raw/natural to polished cabochons, to faceted for sparkle and brilliance.

There are two main categories of cuts: non-faceted (smooth/polished) and faceted (sparkling surfaces).

Smooth / Polished Cuts (No Facets)

Cabochon

A cabochon is a gemstone with a domed top and a flat or slightly curved back.
Common shapes: oval, round, square, or free-form.
Ideal for opaque or translucent stones like agate, moonstone, turquoise, or opal.
Great for stones with interesting internal patterns or optical effects (chatoyancy, asterism, labradorescence).

Faceted Cuts (Multiple Flat Surfaces)
Faceting maximizes light reflection and sparkle. Best for transparent or translucent stones.

Round Brilliant
Classic round shape with many facets for maximum sparkle.
Often used for diamonds, quartz, and transparent stones.

Oval Cut
An elongated round shape that makes the stone appear larger.
Elegant for colored gemstones.

Pear, Marquise, Heart
Distinctive shapes for pendants or special rings.
Pear = teardrop, Marquise = elongated, Heart = romantic shape.

Step Cuts (Emerald, Baguette, Asscher)
Rectangular or trapezoidal facets in a step-like, arrangement.
Emphasizes color and clarity over sparkle.

Mixed / Hybrid Cuts
Combinations like buff-top (smooth top with faceted bottom) or rose cuts.
Can add vintage or unique character to a stone.
